TOM STEPHENS, PIMP, EX COP AND DRUG FIXER FOR IPSWICH PROSTITUTES WATCHED OVER THEIR MOVEMENTS AS THEY SOLICITED FOR CLIENTS ON THE DARK CORNERS OF THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT OF IPSWICH.
FAMILIAR WITH THE IPSWICH SEX INDUSTRY, HE BEFRIENDED MANY OF THE DRUG ADDICTED GIRLS WHO WOULD FREELY JOKE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS HABITS.
ON 30th OCTOBER 2006 HE WAS WATCHING OVER HIS 19 YEAR OLD GIRL FRIEND TANIA NICOL, TO WHOM HE CLAIMED TO BE CLOSE, AS SHE WAS PICKED UP BY A PUNTER IN A DARK BLUE FORD MONDEO CAR. HE KNEW THAT PUNTER WAS STEVE WRIGHT, A SERIAL SEX ADDICT WHO WAS A FAMILIAR KERB CRAWLER OF THE STREETS OF IPSWICH. WHEN TANIA SAT INTO HIS CAR, WRIGHT DROVE ROUND THE CORNER AND THEN CHANGED HIS MIND ABOUT HER AND SHE GOT OUT.
LATER THAT NIGHT, IN A FIT OF RAGE STEPHENS STRANGLED HIS 19 YEAR OLD SEX SLAVE TANIA, WHO OWED HIM MONEY. SHE WAS THE FIRST GIRL TO DISAPPEAR IN WHAT WAS TO BECOME A NATIONAL RED ALERT MURDER HUNT.

IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WHILE SHE WAS A HIGH PROFILE MISSING PERSON, HER TINY BODY WAS DECOMPOSING IN HIS CAR. HE WAS SCHEMING ON HOW TO SHIFT THE MOUNTING SUSPICION ON HIM, TO SOMEBODY ELSE.
STEVE WRIGHT BECAME THE TARGET. HE KNEW THE SERIAL SEX PUNTER HAD TANIA IN HIS MONDEO CAR AS HE SHADOWED HER AT A DISCREET DISTANCE FROM THE COMFORT OF HIS OWN CAR. UNDER INCREASING PRESSURE NIGHT AFTER NIGHT STEPHENS PROWLED THE FEW STREETS OF IPSWICH WHERE THE PROSTITUTES PLIED THEIR TRADE.
TENSION WAS MOUNTING AS HE SAW WRIGHT CIRCLING THE STREET BLOCKS IN SEARCH OF A HOOKER AND HE SAT OBSERVING HIS NEXT BEST FRIEND GEMMA ADAMS WHO STOOD ON THE KERB ALONE SAFE IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT TOM WAS WATCHING OVER HER. WRIGHT CAME ROUND AGAIN AND THIS TIME HE PICKED GEMMA UP AND THEY DROVE AWAY FOR SEX. STEPHENS KNEW THAT WRIGHT WOULD DROP HER BACK IN ABOUT HALF AN HOUR. THIS WAS A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY AND HE GRABBED IT. WHEN WRIGHT DROPPED HER BACK HE CALLED GEMMA TO HIS CAR. HE THEN TOOK THIS DRUGGED UP GIRL TO A REMOTE PARKING PLACE AND ASKED HER TO STRIP FOR SEX IN THE BACK OF HIS SMALL RENAULT CLIO.

THEN STRADDLING HER BACK HE ASPHYXIATED HER IN AN ARM LOCK. LATER THAT DAY, HE DUMPED THE TWO NAKED BODIES IN THE SWOLLEN STREAM AT HINTLESHAM TO LINK BOTH MURDERS KNOWING THAT GEMMA'S LAST PUNTER, STEVE WRIGHT, WOULD BE THE NUMBER ONE SUSPECT FOR BOTH MURDERS AND THEIR DNA WAS IN HIS CAR AND HIS HOUSE WHERE HE TOOK GEMMA. THE WATER WOULD WASH ALL TRACE OF HIM FROM THE NAKED BODIES. ALL THAT REMAINED WAS FOR HIM TO PHONE THE POLICE AND SHOP WRIGHT.
HEAVY RAINS CAUSED THE RIVER TO FLOOD AND UPSET HIS PLAN. BOTH BODIES WERE WASHED DOWNSTREAM AND GEMMA WASN’T FOUND UNTIL 2ND DECEMBER. STEPHENS EXPECTED POLICE REPORTS LINKING THIS MURDER TO TANIA DIDN’T MATERIALISE. PANIC SET IN AMONGST THE WORKING GIRLS AS THE REALISATION THAT A RIPPER STYLE KILLER WAS ACTIVE IN IPSWICH. TOM STEPHENS GREW EVER MORE HYPER AS HIS PLAN WAS NOT WORKING OUT.
NEXT NIGHT HE WAS BACK ON HIS BEAT WATCHING OUT FOR STEVE WRIGHT AND GOING TO UP THE ANTE TO LINK THE KILLING IN THE EXPECTATION OF POLICE FINDING TANIA’S BODY. PREDICTABLY, SEX ADDICT WRIGHT DROPPED HIS LATEST SEX PARTNER ANNELI ALDERTON FROM HIS FORD MONDEO CAR AND DROVE HOME. SHE KNEW AND TRUSTED TOM WHO BECKONED HER TO HIS SAFE CAR. HE TOOK HER TO WHERE WRIGHT HAD EARLIER TAKEN HER FOR SEX AT NACTON AND ASPHYXIATED HER JUST AS HE HAD DONE TO GEMMA. THIS TIME HE WOULD MAKE SURE THE BODY WOULD BE LINKED TO TANIA. HE CARRIED THE NAKED ANNELI ON HIS SHOULDER INTO THE THICKET AND STRETCHED HER OUT IN CRUCIFORM FASHION TO BE FOUND AND LINKED TO THE OTHERS KNOWING THAT WRIGHT’S DNA WAS ALL OVER HER BODY.
NOW THIS EX COP HAD WRIGHT IN THE BAG FOR THREE MURDERS.

TENSION GREW AS ANNELI WAS REPORTED MISSING AND ON THE 8TH DECEMBER TANIA WAS TAKEN FROM THE RIVER. THE POLICE WERE HOLDING DAILY PRESS BRIEFINGS NOW AND LINKING THE MURDERS. IT WAS NATIONAL NEWS.
HIGH ON THE FINDING OF TANIA’S BODY AND ON THAT SAME NIGHT, POSING AS THE STREET GIRLS’ PROTECTOR, TOM STEPHENS CALLED ANOTHER OF HIS GOOD FRIENDS, ANNETTE NICHOLS JUST AFTER STEVE WRIGHT DROPPED HER BACK ON HER PITCH. HE TOOK HER TO LEVINGTON NOT FAR FROM NACTON AND ON A LAY BY TO THE OLD FELIXTOWE ROAD WHERE WRIGHT HAD EARLIER TAKEN HER FOR SEX, HE STRANGLED HER AFTER SHE GOT A DRUG FIX WHILE SHE WAS NAKED IN HIS CAR. THEN HE LAID OUT HER BODY IN THE WOODS JUST AS HE HAD POSED ANNELI A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY. HE THEN DROVE HOME TO HIS HOUSE IN TRIMLEY JUST TWO MINUTES FARTHER OUT THAT ROAD.
ON THE NEXT NIGHT HE WAS BACK ON HIS BEAT AGAIN WATCHING OUT FOR WRIGHT’S CAR AND WHEN WRIGHT DROPPED OFF DRUG ADDICT PAULA CLENELL AND WHILE POLICE HAD THE AREA SATURATED WITH CAMERAS AND POLICE UNDERCOVER OFFICERS, STEPHENS WAS ABLE TO PICK UP HIS NERVOUS FRIEND PAULA AND TAKE HER BACK TO THE AREA WHERE WRIGHT HAD BEEN WITH HER FOR SEX. THIS TIME HE RAN CLOSE TO A POLICE PATROL PRESERVING THE SCENE OF THE NACTON FIND AS HE WAS PICKING A PLACE TO LAY HER OUT. HE MADE A UTURN AND IN A PANIC HE DUMPED HER BODY JUST OFF THE ROAD, NOT STOPPING TO REARRANGE IT. AN UNREPORTED WITNESS SAW HIM PARKED THERE AND SAW A BODY IN HIS CAR.
HE BURNED ALL THEIR CLOTHES EACH TIME AND BEGAN COURTING THE GROWING ARMY OF MEDIA PEOPLE IN IPSWICH WHO WERE PAYING FOR INFORMATION. STEPHENS WAS ON A HIGH. ON THE NIGHT THAT HIS INTERVIEW WITH THE SUNDAY MIRROR WAS PUBLISHED HE PHONED THE POLICE, TOLD THEM HE MIGHT BE A JECKYLL AND HYDE KILLER AND WAS ARRESTED NEXT MORNING.
AT THAT POINT THE POLICE WERE ALREADY CONVINCED HE WAS THE SUFFOLK STRANGLER AND HIS ARREST WAS IMMINENT. BUT STEPHENS HAD STOLEN A MARCH ON THEM. HE INFORMED THEM THE REG NUMBER OF WRIGHT’S CAR AND TOLD THEM THAT IN HIS CAPACITY AS THEIR PROTECTOR HE WAS SHADOWING THEM AND SAW THAT FORD MONDEO CAR PICK UP THE LAST TWO VICTIMS, ANNETTE AND PAULA.

IN AN UNPRECEDENTED MOVE,THE POLICE WERE ASSISTED BY TWO CPS LAWYERS DRAFTED IN TO THIS FRONT PAGE MURDER HUNT AND WHO DIDNT HAVE EXPERIENCE OF DEALING WITH CRIMINALS. THEY WERE AT THE HEART OF THE QUICK DECISION TO ARREST AND CHARGE WRIGHT.
WRIGHT WAS ARRESTED AT 5.00 AM THE NEXT MORNING ON FOOT OF THIS INTELLIGENCE. HE DENIED KNOWING THE GIRLS AT FIRST BUT WAS FORCED TO ADMIT THAT HE HAD SEX WITH THOSE TWO VICTIMS ON THE NIGHTS THEY WERE LAST SEEN. THE POLICE WERE ELATED AT HAVING WRUNG THE ADMISSION FROM HIM. HE ADMITTED THAT HE HAD TANIA IN HIS CAR AND HAD SEX WITH THE OTHERS. HIS DNA WAS MATCHED WITH SALIVA ON THEIR BODIES. THIS MEANT THAT WRIGHT HAD BEEN THE LAST MAN KNOWN TO BE WITH ALL FIVE VICTIMS BUT HE DENIED THAT HE KILLED THEM. TWO DAYS AFTER HIS ARREST HE WAS CHARGED WITH THE FIVE MURDERS AND IN THE FOLLOWING WEEKS THE POLICE WERE BUSY COBBLING TOGETHER FIBRES, HAIR FRAGMENTS, MICROSCOPIC BLOOD PARTICLES, CCTV PICTURES OF HIS CAR AND DNA TO BOLSTER THEIR CASE AGAINST HIM IN WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS A CLASSIC STITCH UP. HIS INTERACTION WITH THE FIVE VICTIMS WAS A SERIES OF COINCIDENCES THAT WRIGHT COULDN’T EXPLAIN TO A JURY. HIS LEGAL TEAM FAILED TO HIGHLIGHT THAT HIS DNA WAS THERE BECAUSE HE HAD SEX WITH THEM AND NOT BECAUSE HE KILLED THEM. WRIGHT WAS CONVICTED OF THE FIVE MURDERS AND ALWAYS PLEADED HIS INNOCENCE. POLICE AND CPS STATEMENTS AND TV DOCUMENTARIES WENT TO GREAT LENGTHS TO PRETEND THAT WRIGHT HAD BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A RESULT OF DNA FOUND ON THE VICTIMS BODIES BEING IDENTIFIED ON THE DNA NATIONAL DATABASE. THEY WERE DESPERATE TO HIDE THE FACT THAT TOM STEPHENS GRASSED UP WRIGHT. STEPHENS WAS RELEASED JUST DAYS AFTER HIS ARREST. WHATEVER DOUBTS SOME IN THE POLICE, THE MEDIA AND LEGAL DEPARTMENTS HAD ABOUT HIS GUILT WERE UNSPOKEN IN THE RUSH TO JUDGMENT.
WRIGHT WAS HELD IN ISOLATION IN LONG LARTIN AND WAS DENIED HIS MAIL BEFORE AND AFTER HIS TRIAL. HE TRIED TO APPEAL ONLY TO BE REFUSED THE RIGHT TO APPEAL AND WAS DENIED ACCESS TO THE APPEAL COURT. ALL ATTEMPTS TO APPEAL HAVE BEEN FRUSTRATED BY THE AUTHORITIES SO FAR.

On Sunday 17th December 2006 the Sunday Mirror had an exclusive front page story about the Ipswich murders which were the talk of the whole country.

On the Next day 18th December 2006 Detective Chief Superintendent Stewart Gull called a press conference and stated;

‘A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering five women found dead at sites around Ipswich.'

Superintendent Gull of the Suffolk Police said the man was arrested at his home in Trimley, near Felixstowe.

He was referring to Tom Stephens although he didn’t name him. Stephens had been arrested at 7.20 am that Monday morning by a team of detectives who arrived at his home with a warrant and took possession of everything he had including himself, just the morning after the Sunday Mirror published a remarkable interview which identified and named him as a suspect in the murders and in which he predicted his arrest. He had volunteered the interview and consented to publication having made free with many journalists who for the previous few weeks were scouring Ipswich for leads on what had become the hottest story in the country. The main thrust of the interview was to portray himself in the role of a protector for the prostitutes of Ipswich most of whom he personally knew. Stephens put on a good act calculated to depict himself as an innocent bystander who knew all the victims but who was full of remorse for having failed to protect them and who felt the loss of his friends deeply, particularly the first two victims, Tania and Gemma. He achieved this by frequent feigned breakdowns into tears as he spoke to the interviewer in his car for two hours. That interview was the talk of the nation that Sunday and no doubt of particular interest to the police who had completely different ideas about him and knew a lot about him having been watching him for the previous six weeks. They believed that Stephens was lying and was indeed the killer who was engaged in deception, clouding the facts and preempting their actions because he had correctly stated that they were planning his imminent arrest. Not alone had Stephens been knocking on doors of prostitutes in the early hours that morning before his arrest allegedly looking for sex but he phoned the police only hours before his arrest and said he was worried about whether he had a split personality and was doing things he didn't know about, then was going back to his normal personality.  Clearly Stephens was manipulating the police and then when he was arrested he refused to talk but he did impart that magic ‘intelligence’ that put Steve Wright in the spotlight and led to his arrest the next morning.

It features a woman in a cruciform shape with one leg raised and hair arranged in a distinctive triangle above her head – eerily similar to the pose Anneli Alderton and Annette Nicholls were discovered in.

’ her hair was posed straight up from her head.' "Not a position that you would expect at all if the body is dumped on the ground,"

This evidence connects Tom Stephens to the victim's dead bodies and was scarcely mentioned and not considered at all because Stephens was not on trial. In my view that evidence is more relevant than the DNA that was used to connect Wright to the victims when it was known and admitted by him that he had sexual intercourse with them all but one when they were alive.

Stephens regarded himself as first victim Tania Nicol's “boyfriend” and, after her disappearance, bombarded her distraught mother with a series of bizarre phone calls.

In one chilling exchange he asked whether the girls would still walk the streets “if one of them was murdered”.

It all hung on the disappearance or murder of Tania for which Stephens was the number one suspect. Steve Wright was presumed to have picked up Tania at 11.30 pm on 30th October captured on cctv and promoted as police evidence that he was her killer. However two witnesses adamantly claimed to have seen Tania at a later time and that would support his evidence that he declined to have sex with her after he got a close up look at her perhaps he thought she was too young or her acne was off putting. The prosecution suggestion is that he picked her up at about 11.30 and drove away to have sex and then strangle her and at 1.39 am on 31st October he was captured on cctv driving out of Ipswich. Police say he was taking her body to Copdock to the river but he says he dropped her off just a short distance from where he picked her up and was later driving around to relax his mind. Stephens who was observing the indebted Tania, might well have thought she was holding out on him and he would have seen and known Wright's car as he made the rounds of the red light area that October night.

Steve Wright was a sex customer for all five victims. While he admitted having Tania Nicol in his car he didnt have sexual relations with her but he did have with the other four. The evidence that his DNA was found on the victims did not prove that he was a killer. What it did prove was that he had sexual relations with them as he admitted.

Like the charge of the Light Brigade the police forged ahead with their blinkers firmly in place and their statements after the verdict about DNA and blood all indicate their own doubts about Wright’s guilt. Those statements about his DNA being matched with the national database were a blatant lie but were made to reinforce the verdict and enhance it with the billion to one lie that accompanies every item of DNA in all criminal trials.

Tom Stephens had come under increasing police scrutiny and pressure as the only suspect in the suspected abduction and murder of Tania Nicol, the young prostitute with the film star good looks. The four subsequent murders were committed with the motive to link them clearly with Tania's murder in order to divert that suspicion. He alone knew that Steve Wright had been the last man to see each one of them, before he got to them. Thats why he went to the police to set up a false alibi for himself the day after he killed Gemma Adams, his second victim. But Tania had been on the streets for a few hours after Wright had met and dropped her and that was something that troubled him.

Paula Clennell became a target when she gave an interview to ITV on 5th December just three days after the first body was found and during which she revealed that Tom had texted her saying that he saw Tania in the early hours of the morning. That revelation alarmed Stephens and it put Paula at risk from this killer. He seized his chance to silence her just a few nights later.

THORPE HILL BRIDGE HINTLESHAM

This is the most likely spot where Stephens dumped the two naked bodies into the stream below. Its low wall and remote location was a perfect place to go unnoticed and Gemma was found just a few hundred yards downstream from here while Tania was carried two miles farther on to Copdock as the stream skirts Ipswich town on its route to the sea. Gemma was last seen in the early hours of the 15th November and he had all that day to select this dumping place for two dead bodies laying in the back of his small car.

The very next day November 16 Tom Stephens went to the Ipswich police station accompanied by a woman called Tracy Russell.

“He told an officer that the prostitutes he knew had 'such an overwhelming addiction to drugs that they would take irrational risks',” said Mr Fenhalls. “He had warned them that if they went out to work then one of them would be murdered.”

Tracy Russell is a woman who has been heavily involved in this series of crimes because of her association with Stephens. She had slept at his flat a few times and was well known to Tom as a friend. Tracy had done drugs with Gemma only hours before she disappeared and she had then accompanied her walking the red light district that fateful night. Now Stephens was taking her to the police station to get her to back up his alibi that kept him out of the area at the crucial time.

A week later she said she told the police that he asked her to lie

I can’t think of anything more incriminating than asking a person to tell a lie to create an alibi when there was a possible murder and an undoubted abduction only hours earlier. If the police didn’t take this on board at the time then it was a serious failure and even now it should be investigated because it is so crucial. It also shows how Stephens was abusing these drug addicts for his own purposes and manipulating them to commit crime for his benefit.

 

"Tania, Gemma, Netty, Paula, Anni," reads the note attached to a bunch of fading pink roses left in tribute to the five murdered Ipswich sex workers. "I knew some of you better than others. But I miss you all. X Tom."

The flowers have been tied to a lamp-post next to a police cabin, erected last week at the junction of London Road and Handford Road on the corner of Ipswich's red light district. This is the very spot, a former sex worker told the Guardian yesterday, at which Tom Stephens would park his car most evenings and wait for the women working in the area to walk past, or to call him.

Postcard found by George Westcott and Patrick Cullinane who were with Noel O'Gara when George found it hidden in a shrine of flowers left by sympathisers at the road block near where the bodies of the last three victims were found.

No sympathiser would dream of leaving such a message under the circumstances, but the killer who was prepared to dance on the graves of his dead victims. The handwriting is identical to Tom Stephens writing in his earlier card posted on a pole in Ipswich only this card is addressed to Annette Nicholls.

Just a few days before she died Annette Nicholls, one of the dead women, told her friend Ms Goldsmith: "Did you know Tom was a copper?" Days later she was his next victim.

Stephens himself told a BBC reporter. ' It wasn't a relationship like that, although Annette [Nicholls] in fact thought that we were an item," he added. The card above was addressed to Annette and signed with a heart pierced by an arrow.

With my two colleagues I went to the central police station in Ipswich to discuss my evidence and my experience with the Yorkshire Ripper case but I received a very hostile reception there and in the end we were shown the door with our request to meet Mr Gull dismissed out of hand.

More interesting revelations about Stephens aired at the trial

Evidence that Stephens was stalking Steve Wright came when a witness told the court that she saw a Ford Mondeo parked on the side of the road in Levington and a Renault Clio parked about 300 yards further up the road.The police suggested that Wright had an accomplice when he dumped the bodies but the evidence is more demonstrable that Wright was being stalked at a safe distance and was unaware of what was happening. Just as Wright finished his sexual tryst and returned Annette back to the red light district Stephens picked her up on the pretense of taking care of her and brought her to get a drug fix and then took her back to Levington and killed her before dumping her body where Wright had been parked up having sex.

In the quest for information several days after the event, a witness told police that Anneli Alderton was picked up by a chubby kerbcrawler in a dark blue BMW. That description fits Steve Wright and his dark blue Ford Mondeo looks very much like a dark blue BMW and we know that he did pick her up.

It was recorded at the trial that an ex-girlfriend of Tom Stephens said he had threatened to kill both her and her friend after she broke from him. They had to get a court order to restrain him. See EADT report here. Not even Wright's defence counsel suggested that the wrong man was on trial while all the evidence supported that.

HOW STEPHENS DID IT

There were little or no injuries on the victims bodies indicating that they were either drugged or otherwise unconscious when killed. Stephens drove a two door Renault Clio as in the photo. The doors are a bit bigger than the four door version and its easy to hop into the rear with the front seat tilted forward.

He only had to ask these drugged prostitutes to get their clothes off and sit in the back seat before he climbed in too. Once he had them bending over with their knees on the back seat and their legs spread some, their hands on the front seats and him sitting over their legs he could spring his trap by grabbing their wrists and pulling them back when their heads would drop into the well between the seats and they couldnt kick out or strike out as he sat on their backs with very little effort until they passed out. It is only a prostitute who is also a drug addict that might easily do whatever a client asks and they all trusted Tom, the man who was supplying them or taking them to their suppliers.

I have been forwarded your email dated 4th August 2013, entitled ‘www.suffolkstrangler.com’.

I note that your email was sent to Avon and Somerset police and all police forces. Please note that Suffolk Constabulary led the investigation into the tragic murders of Tania Nicol, Paula Clennell, Gemma Adams, Anneli Alderton and Annette Nicholls 2006 and as such correspondence should be directed accordingly.

I would wish to point out that the facts of this case were scrutinised at length during the trial of Steve WRIGHT at Ipswich Crown Court in 2008. This included references to the third party you have named. A jury unanimously found WRIGHT guilty of these murders based on the evidence presented before them.

It is in this context that I do not think it is appropriate to elaborate on the specific questions you have raised regarding the third party named in your email.

I wrote to Andy Smith on 17th August as follows and am awaiting a reply.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your response to George Westcott and I note that you are blaming the jury for the conviction of Steve Wright.
I am writing to ask you to confirm that you will not be investigating the activities of Tom Stephens any further in relation to the five linked Ipswich murders?

I will of course be adding your comments to my website just to show my readers what the official police position is in relation to the serious and alarming allegation that a man who has gotten away with five murders at least and tricked the police into framing an innocent man, Steve Wright, for those crimes, is allowed to remain at large and continue to be a danger to the public.

George was anxious to inform other police forces about Stephens because he may have moved to London. While you obviously dont want to look at any possibility that your mates in Ipswich made a massive cock up in framing Wright for the five murders, thats great for you but I dont think any decent cop would like to have a man like that living on his patch. Not to mention the public when and if they ever find out how you covered up your mistakes by blaming the jury.
Any jury fed with lies and fabricated evidence can be misled. Your email refers to that as evidence presented before them.
I know you are used to dealing with crime and murders for your breakfast but a man who links five murders in a short space of time with the intention of implicating another person is more than just your ordinary everyday criminal and cannot be dismissed so lightly. This man has to be stopped and you clearly are not willing to do your duty as a policeman.
I will be holding you personally responsible for any further murders committed by Stephens.

I look forward to your reply which will be added to the webpage and would you please be good enough to enclose a photo to back up your testimony.
As these matters are in the public domain and the public were the victims and still at risk, all of this will be published and promoted for the benefit of the public.
